Welcome to Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work, Central University of Tamil Nadu was established in 2013 to provide professional training in the discipline of Social Work. The Department offers a regular two years fulltime postgraduate programme in Social Work, titled as Master of Social Work (MSW). Currently the Department offers three specializations: (i) Medical & Psychiatric Social Work, (ii) Community Development, and (iii) Human Resource and Labour Management (coming academic session, 2017). The forthcoming PhD programme of the Department with an interdisciplinary perspective is also expected to provide a quality learning atmosphere to the aspirants in higher education. Though recently established, the Department has already proved its merit in Social Work education attracting students from across the states in India.

A unique feature of the MSW programme offered by the Department of Social Work in CUTN is the multicultural setting in which it functions with students, teaching and non-teaching staff belonging to different states in India and from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. The multicultural learning atmosphere helps the students in building a national perspective during the training process and also equips them in developing cultural competence in personal and professional life. Another feature is the rural setting in which the University is functioning which provide a peaceful atmosphere for curricular activities. In addition the rural setting also acts as a live lab for the Social Work students to have a direct exposure to the community setting and its dynamics.

The Department has undertaken several community outreach programmes from the time of its establishment in association with academic, Government & Non-Government institutions in the locality. The Department also takes up skill development programmes, extension lectures, knowledge building workshops, National & International seminars, research projects etc. to achieve its vision to be a learning centre in the field of Social Work. The Department is taking continuous efforts to maintain the MSW curriculum and pedagogical tools updated to meet academic, field and student requirements. The strength of the Department is also observable in the first-rate infrastructure facilities (smart classrooms, Social Work Seminar Hall, Department Library) we offer to the students for a vibrant academic atmosphere. The University also provides the students with a well maintained library and computer lab to facilitate the learning and training process. The proactive association of the Department with the University Counselling & Guidance Cell also caters to the personal and professional needs of all the students in the campus.

The teaching faculties of the Department are subject experts in various fields of Social Work practice including public health, mental health, community development, environment and development, social policy, human resource management etc. and provide consultancy to academic, Government & Non-Government institutions in the local to global setting. They are also engaged in research and advocacy in different social sectors contributing evidence based instruction and practice in addition to the contribution of quality publications.
